Aurangabad & Ajanta-Ellora
Rock-cut Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain caves—Ajanta’s murals and Ellora’s Kailasa temple rank among humanity’s largest monolithic sculptures.
Start Ajanta at opening for soft light on frescoes; comfortable shoes and water are essential on cliff stairways. Ellora’s Kailasa required removing 200,000 tonnes of rock. Bibi ka Maqbara echoes the Taj on a smaller scale in town. November–February avoids extreme heat; March–May demands hats and early starts. Hire ASI-licensed guides for context. Hygiene and cash matter in rural services around the sites.
